As GreenfieldTech approaches its 10 year anniversary, it seems an appropriate time to clarify that we are not a green tech company.

In fact, as a company we are older than the Green Tech movement. Green Tech is a term used for a company or technology being environmentally friendly.

So in respond to the frequently asked question: “What does Greenfield mean?”

I would like to quote the Wikipedia definition:

In many disciplines a green field project is one that lacks constraints imposed by prior work. The analogy is to that of construction on green field land where there is no need to work within the constraints of existing buildings or infrastructure.

Taking this to the Telecom industry, the theory is that you can build a brand new, state-of-the-art network or service from scratch without using any legacy hardware or software.

It is from this concept that Greenfield Technologies derives its name. We aim to help build solutions and systems that do not exist by using a combination of our experience and best of breed off the shelf tools.

Now looking at that statement it is apparent that it is not only new software, nor necessarily from one source. Thus your green field could look more like this:

Real Greenfield

Components from different software companies and cloud providers (AWS, Digital Ocean, Google, Alibaba, Microsoft, or IBM) combined with homegrown software. For teams truly building from scratch it is filled with challenges on getting everything working together. Components can include the back-end infrastructure, the front-end user panel (Bootstrap, polymer, java script, etc.) mobile application (iOS or Android), and monitoring (Icinga, Nagios, Rollbar, Homer, etc.); all use various tools – many of which are not designed to come together in plug-and-play.

At GreenfieldTech we add our “secret sauce” of experience on top of best of breed tools and our already existing software to present the final solution that the end customer sees more like this:

Cultivated Greenfield

An organized system, which can be used in predictable ways and meets the needs of different customers. User interfaces and APIs are professional, documented and easy to work with for the business customer to use in preparing their end-user product or service.

We solve problems that other companies say are impossible. By analyzing functionality, streamlining processes and thinking outside the box, we succeed in simplifying the most complex telecom systems.

Our unofficial mottos are:

  • Always listen to experts. They’ll tell you what can’t be done, and why. Then do it.
  • The difficult we do immediately. The impossible takes a little longer.

(Bonus points if you recognize the sources for both quotes.

Greenfield provides creative high-end solutions and services for telecom operators, enterprises, and start-ups. We enjoy making tech dreams a reality – by developing and delivering simple, feasible, affordable and reliable solutions to challenges that seem ‘impossible’.
