Skype, Viber, Line2, Tango and recently, Whatsapp and Facebook – they are all competing within the same market niche. Each one with its own level of success and market traction, but at the end of the day, they are all racing towards the same goal – don’t let the user out of your application. The FOMO affect (Fear Of Missing Out) that is rapidly spreading among all of us had degraded our attention span and our ability to concentrate. The battle to re-focus your usage of your mobile device to a single application had begun.
Since 2010, we had become increasingly involved in the development and operation of several VoIP enabled networks – 2 of which had already crossed the several hundred thousands of users, using both our server technology and our mobile VoIP SDK technology. The buildup of a mobile application within the VoIP sector is different, it is not your normal Big-Data application, it surpasses both the realms of Big-Data and content distribution. It is a combination of Big-Data, coupled with in-depth networking know-how, with sprinkles of user flow usage and UX understanding.
At the heart of our technology, is a VoIP platform design pattern we like calling: “Federated VoIP Switching” – which means, a VoIP switching network that has no single point of failure, no single point of entry and no single management data store. Thus, providing a highly scaleable, highly robust and most importantly, a highly economical solution – without the need to invest a great deal into multiple servers and special IT skills. In fact, all of our platforms are deployed into public clouds, like Amazon AWS, Google Compute/AppEngine and DigitalOcean.
Traditionally, VoIP/Voice switching is highly centric – which means that the endpoints are not part of the equation at all. The endpoint is considered the lowest form of entity within the platform, and should be regarded as a dumb terminal without any capabilities. However, since the inception of the telephone, much had changed – who are we kidding, if Alexander Graham Bell would be here, he would probably freak out – this was surely not his intention. The ever increasing advancement of smart phones, and the increasing smarts introduced to IP Phones are making these into increasingly smart terminals. In other words, we can take back some of the equation into the terminal and allow it to become a true resource within our network. The Federated VoIP Switching approach does that exactly – it takes parts of the provisional interfaces, parts of the routing decisions and parts of the scaling decisions back into the device. When you think about it, the idea is fairly simple – don’t decide for the terminal, let the terminal learn and decide on its own.
Federated VoIP Switching requires a change in the way you think about VoIP services and VoIP switching. Routes are no longer prefixed or pre-configured, routes are dynamically created and manipulated. To an extent, Federated VoIP Switching is the natural extension of DuNDI, enabling true scaling and redundancy within the VoIP network. Due to a lack of centric design, the platform can “scale out” and then “scale in” as required, ensuring that you always meet your budget targets and your usage patterns. Coupled with our “Always On” solution, your can rapidly move between mobile and Wi-Fi networks, even while on an active call – ensuring that your call never drops. Among our platforms features you can find the following:
* Highly optimized for high-latency networks – tested with networks of up to 20% packet loss
* Highly optimized for network utilization – utilizing the Opus Codec and variable bit rate, we optimize utilization
* Proactive quality adaptation – the SDK and servers are optimized for adapting bit rates and bandwidth on the fly
* “Always On” technology – the SDK provides a means to “jump” between mobile and wifi networks and back, calls don’t drop when you move networks
* Multi Platform – the SDK is available for both iOS and Android (fully battle tested)
* Multi Cloud – the platform architecture is cloud agnostic, so can operate within public clouds, private clouds or physical servers
* Video Support – Coming soon
* Utilized best of breed technologies – the platform utilizes the following technologies, Kamailio(tm), Asterisk(tm), PJSIP(tm), WebRTC and our own special hot sauce.
